Sukkah on the Green
Sunday, October 12, 2025 • 20 Tishrei 5786
12:00 PM - 3:30 PMCongregation B’nai Jacob will continue our tradition of hosting Sukkah on the Green, our special Sukkot version of Chapel on the Green. The event takes place behind Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven (230 Temple Street). Rabbi Shapiro will give a brief interfaith service and then we will serve a meal to about 100 people. CBJ will provide sandwiches, fruit, snacks, desserts, and bottled water, according to the detailed list below. We are also soliciting financial contributions so that we can purchase socks to distribute with the meal.
It is a special mitzvah to feed the hungry during Sukkot!
We need CBJ members to prepare or buy food items and deliver them to CBJ at 12:00 pm on Sunday October 12th. Please bring ONLY the food you have signed up for. This will help us keep organized and on schedule. We also need volunteers at the church to help set up, serve, and clean up.
Sukkah builders should arrive at Trinity Church at 1:00 pm. Drivers and on-site helpers should arrive by 1:30 pm. The service begins at 2:00 pm. The meal will start about 2:30 pm and last until about 3:15, at which point we will clean up and be ready to leave by 3:30 p.m.
Parking is available in front of the church or on Chapel Street. Please click here to sign up to donate and volunteer:

Monday, Mar 16th 7:30p to 9:30p
In her book, “Why Rain Comes from Above,” Devora Steinmetz offers an alternative to reading biblical and rabbinic texts literally, dismissing them entirely, or reinterpreting them in a way that seems more relevant to our lives. She argues that these stories, by engaging our imaginations, transform our relationship to the world around us, awaken us to our ethical commitments, and offers ups ways to think about things that, despite all that we know, we don’t fully understand. -
