Mitzvah Garden

Mitzvah day 2012 was the kick off day to start a new garden at B'nai Jacob to help feed the hungry in Connecticut. Since then, many families have been volunteering their time to maintain the garden and bring food to the food bank.

This garden is part of a greater project called Harvest Now. Organizations throughout Connecticut participate with their own gardens. The produce is weighed and delivered to various food banks in the state.

This is a great way to get involved, it's easy and rewarding...a great family project.

LET'S GROW TOGETHER!

Here are the highlights:
COMMITMENT: We need individuals and/or families to commit for one week during the growing season.   Each week begins on Sunday morning and ends Saturday night, (we do not garden on Shabbat).

WHAT'S INVOLVED: You don't need to have a green thumb to participate.  During the week you will be responsible for weeding, watering, harvesting, weighing, and delivering produce to the food pantry.
NOTE: There will be different responsibilities depending which week you choose BUT every week is important. i.e. early in the season: checking on the plants, watering, weeding, etc.  later in the season there will be more to do.

OUR ONLY REQUIREMENT IS THAT THE PRODUCE IS TAKEN TO THE FOOD PANTRY THE DAY IT IS HARVESTED SO IT IS FRESH FOR THE RECIPIENTS AND WILL LAST AS LONG AS POSSIBLE IN THEIR HOME.
