On November 1, 2023, JCARR’s Family #9 arrived in the United States after a long flight from Turkey, where they spent 10 years after fleeing Syria. They were tired, excited, nervous, uncertain of how this next phase of their lives would unfold.  Who would be there to guide them, help them settle in, learn English, learn where to shop for clothes, food and other necessities? Through IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services), they came to New Haven, and JCARR (the Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement) was asked to be their co-sponsor.   A year later they are thriving. The children are adapting to new learning environments, making friends, and finding their niche.  Mom and the youngest are at home, dad is employed full time. They are grateful for the support and guidance JCARR provided.  As a way to show their appreciation and gratitude, they hosted a dinner for the JCARR volunteers who welcomed and accompanied them on their journey and whom they hold in their hearts as their second family. Held at Congregation Mishkan Israel to accommodate their 25 guests, the feast included yellow lentil soup, mini stuffed eggplants, baba ghanoush, mini chicken roll-ups, kibbeh, a rice dish, stuffed okra, stuffed grape leaves, stuffed rolls, salad, hummus, and delicious Turkish-style baklava.   The food was a feast for the eyes and the palate.  This loving, resilient family is a joy to know! The photo to the right was taken of the family the night of their Thank You dinner.
