  • What cemeteries are available for burial? B’nai Jacob owns its own cemetery B'nai Jacob Memorial Park, located on Wintergreen Avenue in New Haven, CT. In addition, B’nai Jacob has a section on Jewell Street known as the Congregation B'nai Jacob Cemetery; no plots in that section are currently available.

  • How do I purchase a grave? Graves can be purchased by calling the cemetery administrator at the synagogue directly or by emailing. Graves cost $1,300 for members and $3,000 for non-members. There is also an administrative fee, charged at the time of the funeral, which is $450 for members and $650 for non-members.

  • What other charges are there for funeral services? The funeral home sets all other fees including grave opening, vault fees, the announcement, etc. Members of the synagogue do not pay any fee for the rabbi to officiate at their funeral. The funeral home automatically assesses a $600 charge for non-members. It is customary for members to make a donation to the rabbi’s discretionary fund in gratitude for her service.

  • What happens if I purchase a grave while I am a member and subsequently leave the synagogue? Current by-laws require three years of full membership at full dues in order to purchase a plot at member rates. Once you purchase the grave, however, it is property and belongs to you.

  • How do I make arrangements for a headstone or marker? Our cemetery has two primary sections: the Marker Section, where graves are marked with bronze footstones, and the Monument Section, featuring graves with granite monuments. The monuments can list the deceased individuals, or it can simply state the family name with each individual's grave marked by a granite footstone.

To arrange for a headstone or marker:
    To order a monument:
    Contact Nolan’s Monument.
To order a footstone marker (bronze or granite): Contact the CBJ office.

The rabbi will review a proof of the marker from our offices to ensure the correct spelling of the Hebrew name. Monuments and footstone markers take approximately three months to prepare from the time of order. Grave markers are installed, usually with an unveiling ceremony, within one year following the death.
